Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty
Snoring Surgery (UPPP)
Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a surgical procedure to remodel the uvula, soft palate, and throat to reduce snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea. It is performed under general anaesthetic with local anaesthetic also injected during surgery, which wears off after approximately 10 hours. Pain is most significant in the first few days. A minimum of 3 litres of water daily is required during recovery, and two weeks off work is recommended.
About This Procedure
- Remodels the uvula, soft palate, and throat tissue
- General anaesthetic; local anaesthetic also injected during surgery (wears off ~10 hours)
- Minimum 3 litres of water daily during recovery
- Two weeks off work recommended
- Pain relief: Panadol and Nurofen (up to 3 times daily with meals). Endone only if other medications are insufficient
- White coating on the throat and bad breath are normal — not infection; antibiotics not required
- Uvula swelling is expected post-operatively
Recovery
- 1Immediately post-op
Pain usually not too bad initially as local anaesthetic is still active (wears off ~10 hours). Begin eating and drinking and take regular pain relief.
- 2Day 1
Usually the worst day of pain. Take regular pain relief. Consume plenty of water and icy poles. Stitches in the throat and white appearance are normal. Uvula swelling is expected.
- 3Days 2–3
Take regular pain medication regardless of pain level. Bad breath is common. Drinking is essential; eating is optional. Continue icy poles.
- 4Days 3–7
Take Panadol and Nurofen (with meals) only as needed. Soft foods only.
- 5Days 7–10
Pain may increase for approximately 24 hours as scabs resolve — this is normal. Take regular pain relief during this period.
Possible Risks & Complications
